There are lots of things to look forward to after exams, as Company Manager Madeleine writes.
It’s officially Spring now, and as a result we can expect a number of things: the sun should come out a bit more, Easter will be just around the corner, and soon the smell of freshly blooming flowers will be in the air! But if you’re a student, maybe there’s something else on your mind other than the copious amounts of chocolate you’re about to eat courtesy of the Easter Bunny. You might instead be concerned about upcoming exams, and the fact that now is the time to start preparing!
If that sounds like you, the wonders of Spring may not provide much comfort or motivation. But don’t worry, all of the hard work you put in now will pay off come Summer, when you can make up for all of the time you spent studying and really enjoy yourself! So to get you motivated to study now, we’ve come up with some things that you will be able to fully enjoy once you’ve finished your exams…
For example, if you have a holiday planned this summer, use it as inspiration to get you through your exams. Just think, in just a couple of months’ time you might be jetting off to a beach in Mexico, or doing some sight-seeing around the old town in Prague, or going interrailing around Europe. Knowing that you will be free to see the world after your exams might make the fact that you’re stuck in the library for a couple of hours every day at the moment that little bit more bearable. Plus, knowing you worked hard in the months prior will make your holiday that little bit more enjoyable!
If you’re not planning on going away this summer, not to worry! There are plenty of other things going on to look forward to right here at home. This is particularly true if you’re a university student, as after exams you will most likely have party season at uni around the corner! Universities all around the country like to treat their students to a variety of university-run balls, garden parties and dinner parties after studying hard for their exams. At the University of Cambridge, for example, Trinity Hall will be throwing their annual June Event this summer – there, students will be able to dance, eat and drink in the grounds of the college until 3:00 am in the morning! Students better be quick though: tickets will sell out quickly, and it’s not to be missed!
For students still in high school – or university students who don’t have any balls or dinners planned for after exams – you can make your own fun! Once exams are over, you’ll be able to dedicate way more time to simply having fun, be it going out for the night, seeing your friends, or going to the theatre. If you’re into the arts, then the River Stage at the National Theatre will be returning in July, where you’ll be able to see a whole variety of acts performing cabaret, spoken word poetry and live music out in the open air on the Southbank. So just think, while you’re trying to memorise the perfect quotes from The Merchant of Venice to include in your upcoming English Literature exams, it will all be worth it in the end when you can unwind in summer, knowing you worked your socks off to get there.
However, perhaps best of all is the knowledge that in the summer you can sleep in as much as you want, watch all of those episodes of The Great British Sewing Bee you neglected to watch during exam season, and generally relax completely guilt free. Do keep in mind, though, that you’re not a machine and you can’t spend all day every day studying for your exams. So remember to take breaks, work at your own pace and set reasonable expectations of yourself while you’re studying over the next couple of months. That way, studying won’t seem too torturous, especially when there’s a whole load of time to spend doing whatever you want on the other side!
So with all of this in mind, keep going and hit those exams out the park!
